5 Facts On BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa Whose Son Was Caught Taking Bribe

BJP leader Madal Virupakshappa’s son was caught accepting a Rs 40 lakh bribe to clear a deal for raw materials needed to manufacture soaps and detergents. A day later, over Rs 6 crore cash was found at the residence of the Karnataka BJP MLA’s son.

  1. Madal Virupakshappa is the MLA from Channagiri in the Karnataka’s Davanagere district.

  2. He was first elected from the Channagiri constituency in 2008 but lost his seat to Congress’s Vadnal Rajanna in the 2013 elections. He was voted back to power in 2018.

  3. According to ADR data, Madalu Virupakshappa had assets worth Rs 5.73 crore when he filed his nomination for the 2018 polls.

  4. The 58-year-old was the chairman of the state-owned Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL), which makes the famous Mysore Sandal Soap. He resigned from the post today morning after the scandal involving his son Prashanth Madal made the headlines.

  5. The BJP leader claims that he has no link to the raid conducted today. The searches were conducted by the anti-corruption wing of the Lokayukta – the state’s ombudsman.  In his resignation letter, he wrote, “I have no link to Lokayukta raid. This is a conspiracy against me and my family. Because there’s a doubt on me I tender my resignation as chairman KSDL board.”
